National Student Eye Opener Conference 2010
The third Eye Opener Conference was a sell-out success as optometry students from eight universities met at Center Parcs in Longleat, Wiltshire for a weekend featuring careers advice, lectures and the annual AOP Eye Ball (26-28 November). BCLA Pioneers Conference and Lecture
Professor Lyndon Jones of the University of Waterloo, Canada delivered the 7th BCLA Pioneers Lecture in London on 23 November 2010. His evening lecture, 'Comfortable contact lenses – a realistic dream for 20/20?', followed an afternoon of presentations on advances in contact lens fitting and assessment. Academy 2010 San Francisco
The 88th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry took place in San Francisco, California from 17-20 November. The lectures and workshops programme at the Academy meeting consisted of a mix of one and two-hour courses. 36th Hospital Optometrists Annual Conference
Timed to coincide with the 2010 NOC, this year’s Hospital Optometrists Conference took place at the same venue, from 5-7 November. 6th International Conference on the Tear Film & Ocular Surface
Florence, Italy was the venue for the 6th International Conference on the Tear Film & Ocular Surface, on the theme Basic Science and Clinical Relevance. Congress on Refractive Error
The World Congress on Refractive Error: Vision Correction Broadening the Development Agenda brought together leaders in optometric and development fields to define global eye care priorities and build sustainable eye care strategies that encompass social, political and economic solutions. Vision UK 2010
The Vision UK 2010 conference, an initiative of the UK Vision Strategy, was held in Birmingham on 15 June to coincide with National Eye Health Week. The conference saw the launch of a new patient's charter for eye care and sight loss services and a key address by the Rt Hon David Blunkett MP. The UK Vision Strategy is part of a global initiative, Vision 2020, to reduce preventable blindness and improve support and services for blind and partially sighted people by the year 2020. Diabetes Week is the annual UK-wide awareness and fundraising week organised by the charity Diabetes UK. In 2010 Diabetes Week was held from 13-19 June. More than 60 organised events took place during the week and many more were organised by individuals across the country. In 2011 Diabetes Week will run from 12-18 June. More than 1,000 delegates headed to Birmingham in May for the British Contact Lens Association’s Clinical Conference and Exhibition, the largest annual event of its type in the world. The European Academy of Optometry and Optics celebrated its first anniversary with a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark attended by nearly 200 participants from over 20 countries. In addition to keynote presentations, there were over 30 posters presented and 16 further oral presentations as well as roundtable discussions. Twenty students from the Glasgow College of Technology class of 1980 were reunited to celebrate their 30-year reunion, at the inaugural Optometry Reunited event.
